FIRST GRI GUIDELINES BASED SUSTAINABILITY REPORT LAUNCHED BY ENGRO CHEMICAL

United Nations Development Program’s (UNDP) Resident Representative for Pakistan, Haoliang Xu has said that the UN team in Pakistan seeks to engage meaningfully with its partners in the civil society and in the private sector to promote better corporate governance and corporate social responsibility. He was speaking as the chief guest at the launch ceremony of Engro Chemical Pakistan Limited’s Sustainability Report in Karachi.
 


He lauded the role of Engro towards helping the less fortunate by specifically appreciating Engro’s efforts to save more than 60,000 lives through their snakebite treatment centre and providing quality education by adopting government schools and developing educational institutions in riverine areas of Sindh. He admired Engro for their timely support to the earthquake victims and their partnership with The Citizens Foundation to build more than 100 seismic resistant houses in village Battal of Mansehra district.

The Sustainability Report prepared by Engro Chemical is based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines making it comparable with international reporting standards. With the launch of this report, Engro Chemical has become the first Pakistani company to issue a CSR Report based on internationally acceptable GRI guidelines on a voluntary basis.

 


TProfessor Rashid Jooma, Head of Neurosurgery Department of JPMC, spoke about “Project Hope”, first Telemedicine intervention of the country by Engro in association with Telemedicine association of Pakistan & Health Department Government of Sindh, which has taken more than 500 cases from Gambat, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Ghotki & Mirpurkhas so far. Dr. Jooma said that this facility has made the highest class of specialists at Karachi readily available to the poor patients in rural areas.

Expressing his views on the occasion, Hussain Dawood, Chairman Engro Chemical Pakistan Limited said, “We understand that a truly successful organization means the one which is generating goodwill among the communities along with making profits. And we firmly believe to give back a certain portion of the revenue that we generate to improve their lives and take them gradually to a Behtar Zindagi. That is what the theme of the report is – A better life for all those who come into contact with Engro.” He added that the report speaks about the performance and strengths of Engro in Social, Environmental and Economic areas and highlights its investment in people, processes and conservation initiatives which have yielded economic and social returns.

Presentations on corporate social responsibility were given by Mr. Tahir Jawaid, Mr. Jahangir Piracha and Dr. Faiz Shah whereas Ms Ambreen Waheed, Director Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), read the message of GRI chief executive.
